the collection (2021)

everything we have experienced throughout our lives shaped and formed us into the person we are at the present. as we live, we constantly come across new things, “collect” bits and pieces, and build ourselves with them. this project was called “the collection” because we are all formed by a collection of events that happened throughout our lives and memories that we made. they all contribute, some more than others, to shaping one’s identity and affect how one sees themselves.

through this project, i wanted to highlight the journey of finding yourself and also how the pieces we collect – which are what we have experienced in our lives – shape us. i wanted to create a story with chapters, going from how our identities begin to form, to how sometimes we get lost but finally arrive at our destination, which is finding who we are. i wanted it to be a journey and we travel through the phrases of our development.

as my project was leaning more towards the nostalgic side and a memory lane, i decided the art direction of my project to be more vintage, organic style. i also decided to create a final piece that was inspired by scrapbooks, because this type of media is often used when people want to keep a good memory alive.

there are seven chapters that depict the cycle of life: life emerging, journey begins, getting lost, denial, acceptance, contentment, and life ending.

all photographs in this project were printed on tea and coffee stained paper to achieve the vintage look, and then mounted on mdf boards, connected using ribbons to create a concertina book styled installation. the final piece was in the shape of a circle to represent the circle of life, and viewers can walk around the piece to look at the photographs inside.

i am very proud of this project, so much sweat and tears, so many hours were put into it. i pushed myself to the max at the time, and i am so glad that i did. this project received an a*, which i am incredibly happy with.
